Monarch Butterflies Independent Itineraries

Best season: Beginning of February to Middle of March

The following are sample itineraries for 4-day or 5-day or  6-day Monarch Butterflies trips.

This season will be a banner season for the Monarchs.  If you have long dreamed of visiting the over wintering sites, you might give some thought to making the trip this year because the monarch viewing should be excellent. The information is from the www.monarchwatch.org.

Status of the Population

It has been an up and down summer.  If you have been following the Updates, you may recall that the number of first generation monarchs that moved north from Texas, Oklahoma and southern Kansas, as well as other areas in south eastern states, in late April through early June was nothing short of spectacular.  From my perspective as one who receives reports from many correspondents, in addition to those sent to Dplex-L and Jouney North, the size of the first generation was certainly the highest in the 14 years I've been following the spring migration.  The surge of monarch northward resulted in some unusual sighting such as substantial numbers of spring monarch being washed up on the shores of Lake Michigan after a storm.  Such events are uncommon but, prior to this report, I had only heard of fall monarchs being washed ashore.....  http://www.monarchwatch.org/update/2006/0831.html#1
The fragile Monarch Butterflies migrate 2500 miles from Canada to the Western Sierra Madre mountain range in central Mexico for the winter. Learn about this epic journey and experience the unique privilege of being in the middle of literally millions of these amazing butterflies in their winter refuges.

This enchanting trip offers the wonderful variety of a privileged visit to two of the protected sanctuaries of the Monarch Butterflies, colonial history, and the unique small colorful folk art villages of Michoacán with centuries-old traditions still alive today. It is suitable for anyone in good health that likes to walk and has a spirit of adventure to enjoy off-the-beaten-track places. All hotels are very comfortable and located in the heart of the historic districts.
